Risk reward analysis for home automation

The home automation group has decided to go with the "safe approach" outlined in our engineering report.
Part of the reason for this decision was that there was not very substantial data for how much automating the windows would net us in energy savings. On the other hand, if something were to go wrong like a window not closing completely, or a opening errantly, it would put huge pressure on the hvac system. If this were to happen during the competition, our score would surely suffer as a result.
I am including this information here, because we have not updated our report since this decision was made.
